S4: São Domingos (Mértola, PT)

Brief description:

The São Domingos Mine is an abandoned mine site located in Mértola, Portugal. The first mining activities date back to the Chalcolithic Age (more than 4000 years ago). Currently, it covers an area of 50 km2 including mine tailings and waste materials contaminated with Sb, As, Cu, Pb and Zn.
